Facing backlash, Balenciaga pulls Moroccan slippers from online boutique

A pair of traditional Moroccan mules, known locally as Belgha, were removed from Balenciaga’s online official boutique, after they had been put for sale for 995 dollars.

The move came after a wave of backlash, with many accusing the luxury fashion house of culturally appropriating the Moroccan shoes.

The mules were put for sale earlier this week. «Flat Mule in black smooth lambskin is in several looks of Balenciaga Summer 24 Collection», read a description of the product online.

The luxury retailer did not mention the striking resemblance the slippers bear to the Moroccan footwear. It just indicated that the pair of shoes is made in Italy, has foldable heel counter, anti-slip band and a worn-out effect. The slippers come in a blue denim style for the same price.
