CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Senegal, Nigeria and Tunisia all suffered surprise upsets Sunday in African World Cup qualifying, while the Ivory Coast became the only team to stay perfect through two matches.

Senegal, which reached the quarterfinals at the 2002 World Cup finals, lost to Togo 3-1 as Senaya Junior scored two goals.

Also, Angola beat Nigeria 1-0, and Guinea topped African Cup of Nations champion Tunisia 2-1.

The Ivory Coast, however, won its second straight match as both Aruna Dindane and Didier Drogba scored again to help beat Egypt 2-1.

Ghana, Congo and DR Congo also won their matches, while Benin and Sudan drew 1-1, as did Zimbabwe and Algeria.

On Saturday, it was: Mali 1, Zambia 1; Cape Verde Islands 1, Uganda 0; Rwanda 3 , Gabon 1; Botswana 2, Malawi 0. On Friday, Libya surprisingly held Cameroon to a 0-0 draw.

Only the five African group winners will qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

In Lome, Togo, Adebayo Sheyi also scored for Togo while Bouba Diop managed to get one back for Senegal in the 85th minute in the 3-1 loss.

Sheyi scored the first goal for Togo in the fourth minute, and Junior added two more in the 35th and 87th.

In Luanda, Angola, Akwa scored the only goal of the match in the 77th minute as Angola upset Nigeria 1-0.

Nigeria has reached the last three World Cup finals and advanced to the second round twice.

In Conakry, Guinea, Kaba Diawara scored two goals as Guinea upset Tunisia 2-1.

Diawara opened the scoring in the 12th minute and then added another in the 46th. Najah Braham got one back for Tunisia in the 55th.

In Alexandria, Egypt, Dindane and Drogba were again the heroes for the Ivory Coast. Both players also scored against Libya two weeks ago.

Dindane struck first in the 15th minute and Drogba added the other in the 75th. Mohamed Abu Traika had briefly equalized for Egypt in the 55th.

In Kumasi, Ghana, Stephen Appiah scored two goals as Ghana blanked South Africa 3-0.

The Juventus midfielder scored both goals in the second half, putting the game out of reach after an early goal from Sule Muntari.

In Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, Michel Claude Bouanga, Armel Mamouna and Gervais Batota scored a goal each as the Republic of Congo easily beat Liberia 3-0.

Liberia, once an African power with George Weah leading the team, has been decimated by the country's civil war.

In Kinshasa, Congo, the hosts got goals from Marcel M'Bayo, Biscotte Mbala Mbuta and Dikilui Bageta, while Burkina Faso answered with strikes from Amadou Toure and Moumouni Dagano.

In Harare, Zimbabwe, Suleiman Rado scored an own-goal in the 73rd minute to give host Zimbabwe a 1-1 draw with Algeria. Abdelmalek Cherrad scored the first goal for Algeria.

In Cotonou, Benin, Ahmed al Fatih equalized in the 45th minute as Sudan held the hosts to a 1-1 draw. Muritala Ogunbiyi scored for Benin in the 30th.
First arrests made in S. African match-fixing bust

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- The South African professional soccer fraternity is bracing itself for more arrests after nine referees, allegedly part of a match fixing syndicate, were taken into custody, police said Sunday.

Police spokeswoman Sally De Beer said the men were arrested early Friday and will appear in court soon on charges of bribery and corruption.

She said more senior Premier Soccer League officials could be taken into custody within the next few days as part of Operation Dribble, launched early this year to eradicate match fixing in the popular sport.

More than 20 officials and players have been implicated and police have warrants for their arrest.

One of the men targeted for arrest is Hellenic premier league team owner Dumisani Ndlovu, wanted for allegedly intimidating referees who assisted police in uncovering the scandal.

The referees are suspected to have been operating for "a number of years," sticking together making it easier to demand large sums of money for fixing matches in both the premier and first division games police said.

According to police, referees accepted bribes of from 10,000 South African rand (US$ 1,563) to affect the result of premier league games and up to 40,000 rand (US$ 6,255) to influence cup fixtures.

The scandal comes just weeks after South Africa was announced host of the 2010 Soccer World Cup by international soccer governing body FIFA.

Trevor Phillips, head of the country's Premier Soccer League, said while he was disturbed by the scandal, it did however have a positive side.

"We have a chance now to get rid of this rubbish and give the South African soccer public something they can trust."
