Algeria, Morocco MP's tackle Western Sahara conflict

ALGIERS, Algeria -- A Moroccan parliament delegation is visiting Algeria hoping to melt the ice between the two neighboring Arab countries at odds over the Western Sahara issue.

An Algerian parliament source speaking to United Press International on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday the Moroccan team led by the Independence Party which is known for its loyalty to King Mohammed VI held talks with the National Liberation Front majority bloc in parliament.

"The main aim of the visit is that parliamentarians from both countries contribute to reactivating diplomacy which has failed so far in mending fences due to mutual accusations over the Western Sahara conflict," the source said.

He said the Moroccan delegation intends to invite Parliamentarians from the National Liberation Front party to visit Morocco and are working together at present on reactivating the Association of Friendship of Algerian-Moroccan Parliamentarians whose operations were suspended due to continuous tensions between the two countries.

The Moroccan team who arrived in Algiers Tuesday is expected to meet Prime Minister Ahmed O'Yehya and several ministers in addition to the Secretary General of the National Liberation Front party Abdel Aziz Belkhadem, who is a state minister and the personal representative of President Abdel Aziz Boutefliqa.

The team will be visiting provinces in southern Algeria to examine projects and achievements in the sectors of tourism and agriculture.

The Moroccan parliamentarians have called on the Algerian government to change its stance on the Western Sahara conflict and end its support to Polisario, the armed movement for the liberation of Western Sahara whose headquarters are located inside Algerian territory.

Algeria backs Polisario which seeks independence of the former Spanish colony which Morocco claims to be part of its national territory.
